Georgia Pullen - Research Executive, Adelphi Research UK

Our Recruits

“While I knew I was interested in the pharmaceutical industry when applying for jobs, my industrial placement year had taught me that a career in lab-based research was not for me”

I wanted a career that would allow me to utilise the skills I had learnt during my degree, but in an environment where I could communicate with people more. This led me to Adelphi. I applied for both the Runway graduate scheme and direct recruitment, and joined Adelphi Research UK in August. I’ve been working for Adelphi Research UK for the last four months and have thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it.

Our Recruits

“support and encouragement was given whole heartedly by all and I really appreciated the contact I had with experienced members of the Group”

I joined Adelphi in 2010 as part of the Runway Graduate Programme. Having completed a year in industry with a medical devices company and been exposed to the dynamic nature of a career within the healthcare sector, I was immediately attracted to the scheme. I was particularly excited by the prospect of trying different ways of working and gaining experience within the different business areas, with every placement providing the opportunity to learn new skills and methodologies.

“Having decided not to continue in education after graduating with a degree in pharmacology, I was eager to find a career within the healthcare industry that utilised my scientific skills but had more of a commercial focus”

After exploring a number of avenues, the Value Insight & Communication (VIC) practice within Adelphi Values seemed to be a perfect fit.

Our Recruits

“Eighteen months ago, I found myself trapped in a monotonous, uninspiring, lab-based job. Desperate to find a more exciting challenge, I began to explore other career options within the science world.”

Having spent an enjoyable year working for AstraZeneca as part of my degree course, I was eager to return to the pharmaceutical sector. However, having taken a job in a lab, I realised that I wanted a role where I could use my science but with a commercial focus. When I stumbled across the Adelphi Runway Graduate Scheme advert on Milkround, I knew straight away that the position was for me. I joined the scheme in September 2011 and, after four 3-month placements in Adelphi Research UK, Adelphi Communications, Adelphi Real World and Adelphi Values, I took up a permanent position with Adelphi Real World (ARW).

Jayne Molyneux - Research Executive, Adelphi Research

Our Recruits

“I joined Adelphi originally because I had always wanted to work as a researcher, even undertaking an MSc in research methods and statistics”

Adelphi offered me the perfect job; conducting diverse research where I get to use both my statistical and psychological background. As a psychology graduate there is plenty of opportunity for me to continue to expand my knowledge as well as develop knowledge into new, fascinating subject areas. Recent project areas I have researched into are schizophrenia, ADHD and pathological myopia (a degenerative eye condition), there really is never a dull moment!

“There is a good training programme in place, but a great deal of the learning comes from handling multiple projects, juggling deadlines, and dealing directly with clients”

I joined Adelphi after working in a research post in Sheffield, because I wanted a more varied job with opportunities for progression. Every day is different, but typically I might have a client conference call to kick off a new project, or a discussion with a member of the client’s team to get their thoughts or decisions on an ongoing project. Much of the rest of the day will be spent working on one or more of my projects: as a member of the editorial team I am responsible for writing manuscripts, and delivering posters, slide decks, or other reports such as competitor analysis for the client. I find it really interesting because it’s so varied, and I’ve learned a lot from the various projects I’ve worked on. Every piece of work we deliver is reviewed by several people so it’s a team effort with lots of support, but I also have a lot of responsibility in dealing with the client on a daily basis, meeting deadlines and handling several parallel projects. We also work with project managers to draw up timelines and make sure that we meet all our deadlines and are working within budget.

“it’s important to choose a job that’s challenging, has variety, and gives you the opportunity to continue learning”

After finishing university I didn’t really know which direction to go in. I had originally thought that I’d be interested in lab-based research, but after completing a lab-based project in my final year at university, decided the lab wasn’t for me! Despite this, I was still keen to pursue a career that was relevant to my degree and that’s when I came across the Adelphi Graduate Programme advertised at my university careers fair. I successfully joined the programme in September 2008, before choosing to join Mapi Values at the end of the scheme in 2009. The possibility to try out working in a variety of Adelphi companies really appealed to me, and helped me recognise the area in which I would like to work.

“I left university wanting a job in science communications and was pleased to be offered a job at Adelphi Communications.”

Although as an Associate Project Manager I am not directly involved in writing, I have plenty of opportunity to keep up with the latest advances in science and medicine and gain insight into new directions in pharmaceuticals. I have no doubt that as my career at Adelphi progresses I will have further chances to apply my science background. In fact, after work today a group of us are heading off to a presentation on Personalised Medicine at one of the local pubs.
