“You will have endless support, not only from colleagues at your own level, but managers, directors and MDs”

A previous graduate of my MSc course had been offered a position with Adelphi two years earlier. She presented to us about how many opportunities the Adelphi Group provides, with each of the Adelphi companies touching on different aspects of pharmaceutical drug development. With a BScin Criminology and Psychology and an MSc in Health Psychology, it seemed like a great opportunity to see where my knowledge and skills gained from my degrees would fit into this industry. I have a position in ACL (Adelphi Communications), which suits my passion for the fast-paced and diverse nature of the client services role in the medical communications and medical education space.

“I work in a fast paced and ever-changing environment where no two days are the same”

While studying for an integrated Master’s degree in Biological Science, I spent my final year within a research lab – however, I realised that although I was interested to continue in science and healthcare, I wanted to pursue a career looking at this from another perspective. Having found out about the Adelphi Graduate programme at the university careers fair, it ticked all the boxes for me. The graduate scheme here has given me the opportunity to do this, allowing me to make use of my scientific background but at the other end of the spectrum.

“With the diversity of projects and work available I find myself doing something different almost every day”

Prior to joining Adelphi I worked in Sainsbury’s for almost three and a half years. Whilst thoroughly enjoying working in customer service, I decided I wasn’t going to sell my soul to the retail industry and set out to find a job where I could combine my scientific knowledge acquired in university with the client-facing skills I had developed over the years. Having come across Adelphi Values, I soon realised this would be the place where I could put all my skills into practice, while also making a positive impact on the world (cheesy, I know, but that really is the main reason I decided to join this company).

“Providing the opportunity for me to expand and learn so much more and additionally the chance to travel during my career was definitely a big influencing factor”

Throughout university I believed that if I was going to utilise my degree skills that my only option would be to become a psychologist. After gaining experience in this field I discovered that, although I was interested in healthcare that this was not for me. I came across Adelphi’s graduate scheme on Milk round and it seemed to tick all of the boxes for me, using skills I had already gained within quantitative and qualitative research as well as providing the opportunity for me to expand and learn so much more! Additionally the chance to travel during my career was definitely a big influencing factor.

“Adelphi is an ideal place to improve yourself … there is a really good working atmosphere, everyone pulls together”

I joined Adelphi because I thought that market research was an ideal career to enter into having done apsychology degree. This is because it was an opportunity to put the theory of research into practiceand this was certainly the case as you will definitely ‘hit the ground running’.

Days at Adelphi are rarely ‘typical’ – you will often spend time out of the office visiting clients orattending interview days. When you are in the office you spend much of your time answering emails and managing the practical application of the market research. You’ll do things like speaking with 3rd party recruiters and external analysts to make sure everything is going according to plan.

“The greatest piece of advice I could give an individual starting at Adelphi is to jump at any opportunity, as hard work is rewarded and new ideas and creativity are encouraged”

After my degree, I travelled around Australia and South East Asia for a year before working at the clinical research unit at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital. It was then that I decided I would like to drive my career towards a commercial role within the pharmaceutical sector.

“Adelphi is an inclusive, welcoming environment, where there’s a particular importance placed on teamwork, and where the workload is sufficiently diverse and challenging so as to remain consistently engaging”

When I moved away from clinical practice, I decided to pursue a career in medical communications for mostly self-motivated reasons, based on my own strengths, weaknesses, and interests. However, when I decided that Adelphi was the right place for me to start that career, it was, by contrast, entirely because of the company. It was my understanding then, and has been my experience since, that Adelphi is an inclusive, welcoming environment, where there’s a particular importance placed on teamwork, and where the workload is sufficiently diverse and challenging so as to remain consistently engaging.

“My role offers me the variation I was seeking in my career, working across multiple therapy areas and learning new research skills to apply to our projects”

While studying Neuroscience and Psychology at undergraduate level, I began to develop a keen interest in the field of science and healthcare. I was able to combine these areas of interest as I completed my MSc in Health Psychology, and subsequent further training in order to work as a Nutritionist. While I found this role hugely rewarding, I still felt that I wanted greater variety to my working day, and so was delighted to be offered a position as a research associate with Adelphi Values. I am pleased to say my role offers me the variation I was seeking in my career, working across multiple therapy areas and learning new research skills to apply to our projects.

“Following a year abroad I embarked on a search to find a graduate scheme that both suited my interests and offered good developmental opportunities … it’s a decision that I can honestly say that I don’t regret”

When I joined Adelphi I initially started in international market research where I developed my skills quickly through fast-paced research projects. Days at Adelphi Research typically begin with the necessary email check, as work is international, from China to South America, you can guarantee that you will have some emails demanding to be actioned. Graduates are generally assigned to 3-4 projects in different therapeutic areas with fluctuating timelines; strong project management skills are the first to develop
because of this. The diverse nature of the research Adelphi carries out means that you are challenged continuously and you must be able to thrive on the changing nature of each day. After the emails, tasks can involve the design of research materials, the management of fieldwork logistics, analysis of data and development of presentations. By working on every aspect of research projects you build a wide variety of skills that will be invaluable to you throughout the rest of your career.

“Three years ago, I found myself trapped in a monotonous, uninspiring, labbased job. Desperate to find a more exciting challenge, I began to explore other career options within the science world.”

Having spent an enjoyable year working for AstraZeneca as part of my degree course, I was eager to return to the pharmaceutical sector. I realised, however, that I wanted a commercial role rather than a lab-based role so when I stumbled across the Adelphi advert on Milkround, I knew the position was for me. I joined the Adelphi Group in September 2011 and am currently a Project Manager with Adelphi Real World (ARW).

“It’s important to choose a job that’s challenging, has variety, and gives you the opportunity to continue learning.”

After finishing university I didn’t really know which direction to go in.  I had originally thought that I’d be interested in lab-based research, but after completing a lab-based project in my final year at university, decided the lab wasn’t for me!  Despite this, I was still keen to pursue a career that was relevant to my degree and that’s when I came across the Adelphi Graduate Programme advertised at my university careers fair.   I successfully joined the programme in September 2008, before choosing to join Adelphi Values at the end of the scheme in 2009.  The possibility to try out working in a variety of Adelphi companies really appealed to me, and helped me recognise the area in which I would like to work.
